Libertalia, instead Defoe created a fake pirate by the name of Caption Misson

<placeName>Libertalia</placeName>
<note>Libertalia is said to be a pirate utopia located somewhere on an island off
the coast of Madagascar. In Defoe's telling of Libertalia, a pirate named
Captain Misson founded the utopia, but Misson is based off of the pirate Henry
Avery who is said to be the actual founder of the settlement. Not much is known
about the real life version of Libertalia, as there was never documented
recognition of the settlement existing outside of pirate talk. In the game,
Avery and various pirates founded the "utopia" and created two living quarters
in it. Pirates who could solve their clues and find Libertalia, were allowed to
bring their familes and live there, hidden away from the law that was trying to
find them.</note>

<p>In the game Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, the main protagonest <hi><persName
ref="Nathan_Drake">Nathan Drake</persName></hi>, and his brother <hi><persName
ref="Samuel_Drake">Samuel Drake</persName></hi>set off on an adventure to find the
lost Pirate Utopian City known as <hi><placeName ref="Libertalia"
>Libertalia</placeName></hi>. Through a series of clues, found through gameplay
involving puzzles, combat, and climbing, the pair are led to Scotland, thanks to finding
a cross of Saint Dismas in a pirate prison cell, where they find the "grave" of Pirate
<hi><placeName ref="Captian_Avery">Henry Avery</placeName></hi>. The clues at the
grave then led the pair to a series of islands off the coast of Madagascar. It is one of
of these islands, hidden away beneth dense jungle, the two find the lost city of
Libertalia. In the games plot, Libertalia was founded by not only Henry Avery, but he
was joined by other famous pirates such as <hi><placeName ref="Thomas_Tew">Thomas
Tew</placeName></hi>, <hi><placeName ref="Adam_Baldrige">Adam
Bladrige</placeName></hi>, <hi><persName ref="Anne_Bonny">Anne Bonny</persName></hi>,
and <hi><persName ref="Christopher_Condent">Christopher Condent</persName></hi>.
Together, these pirates founded and created Libertalia as a utopia and safe hideaway for
all pirates who were able to find it<note>In the game, it was difficult for pirates to
live in Libertalia due to how difficult it was to find and solve the clues that led
to the island. Those who were able to find the utopia, were greeted with open arms
and seen as worthy and successful pirates.</note>. The setup of Libertalia in
Uncharted 4 inclued various small guard towers around the outskirts of the island, a
small, shanty type city on one half of the island<note>The area in which other pirates
and their families would live is very broken down and being overtaken by nature in
the game due to Nate finding it so long after it was abandoned, so it isn't known
what they fully looked like when they were brand new buildings. Below this paragraph
is an image take from the game that gives a sense of what the civilization looked
like. It includes both the shanty town and the walled in town, but in lesser detail
as it is more of an overhead map of the island.</note>, and a walled in, high classed
city for higher up pirates on the other half of the island, which included a port to
ship treasuer in and out of the settlement<note>When compared to the Libertalia in
Defoe's novel, the city in Uncharted 4 is much more advanced and put together much
better than the "real life" version. In defoe's tellings, all of Libertlaia was one
city, and was only found by Avery. The city was also said to have not thrived for
very long, and was abandoned soon after it was established.</note>. Libertalia and
all of its inhabitants followed a very specific pirate code which called for everyone to
defend Libertalia in case of an attack, and all those who abanded the settlement would
be executed<note>Since not much is known about the real life version of Libertalia, it
is not known whether there was a pirate code of honor or not, but it can be assumed
that since the civilization is thought to have not lasted very long, that there was
no need for this set of rules.</note>. The civilization ultimatly failed when the
civilians started a civil war when they discovered that the founding pirates created a
plan to take all the civilizations gold, and escape to live out lavish lifestyles by
themselves<note>While this makes for a great story in the game, it was highly
unlikely that any civilians actually lived in Libertalia when it existed. The
"Utopia" was said to have been a basse for pirates, but not for their families,
acting more like a safe haven than a living space.</note>. As the war was going on,
the founding pirates were invided to Tew's manor for a celebratory dinner, but were
poisened and killed by Avery and Tew, who wanted the treasure all for themselves. In the
end, neither Tew nor Avery made it off the island as they turned on each other on the
ship filled with all the treasure of Libertalia, making the island their final resting
place.</p>
