                <p>Our aim in this edition has been to transcribe the content of the letters as
                    accurately as possible without reproducing the physical appearance of the
                    manuscript. Craik’s spelling, punctuation, underlining, superscripts,
                    abbreviations, additions and deletions are retained, except for words which are
                    hyphenated at the end of a line, which we have silently emended. Where Craik
                    uses a non-standard spelling, we have encoded both her spelling and the standard
                    Oxford English Dictionary spelling to faciliate searching. The long s is not
                    encoded.</p>

                <salute>– No letter still – my child, do you imagine how <hi rend="underline"
                        >very</hi> little you write to mother? – Had we started tomorrow, I might
                    have missed it altogether. – </salute>
                <p><persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#SpeerCharlton">Charlton</persName> &amp;
                        <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#SpeerAmy">Amy Speer</persName> send the
                    enclosed letter with best wishes to you &amp; <persName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#PilkingtonAlexander">Alexander</persName>.
                        <persName>Amy</persName> wanted to send a big ficus - but I declined. – It
                    was a pretty wedding – just relatives &amp; intimate friends – you will be glad
                    to hear I didn't "cry"!! – maybe I felt rather like it in the vestry – when the
                    bridegroom affectionately kissed me – just as <persName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#PilkingtonAlexander">Alexander</persName> might have
                    done under similar circumstances. – The only defect was the reception being too
                    long – I had to leave before the couple did – The bridegroom put <hi
                        rend="underline">me</hi> into a cab instead of driving off himself! – When
                    you are married we won't "prolong the agony" – you shall go almost immediately.
                    We had a perfect thunder-storm last night - but today it is lovely again &amp;
                    so fresh - <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#CraikGeorge">Papa</persName> quite
                    enjoys our peaceful days &amp; evenings. – We have had only <persName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Eliza">Eliza</persName> &amp; <persName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Katie">Katie</persName> for servants till today. –
                    but he has never complained – he reads at night a great deal. We finished <title
                        corresp="CraikSiteIndex.xml#AuroraLeigh">Aurora Leigh</title> &amp; found it
                    uncommonly long-winded – not to say dull. – The black kitten makes himself at
                    home – either on my shoulder or <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#CraikGeorge"
                        >Papa's</persName>. – We went to dine at <persName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#MrAnderson">Mr. Anderson's</persName> - &amp;
                        <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Mayday">Mayday</persName> has grown a
                    lovely animal. – <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#AndersonMary">Mary</persName>
                    sings so well. We have arranged that instead of <unclear>Rochester</unclear> she
                    is to come to us every Friday – &amp; have letters from <persName>Mr.
                        Martin</persName> – returning at 4 P.M. – <persName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#MrMartin"><hi rend="superscript">Mr.</hi>
                        Martin</persName> &amp; his young lady are coming to lunch on Sunday - &amp;
                    on Monday morning <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#CraikGeorge">Papa</persName>
                    &amp; I - <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#PikeConnie">Connie</persName> &amp;
                        <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#PikeBel">Bel</persName> start – vaguely –
                        <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#PikeAda">Ada</persName> goes with
                        <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#ColvilHelen">Helen Colvil</persName> to
                        <placeName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Switzerland">Switzerland</placeName>. –
                    That is all the news I think. – I shall go in &amp; tell <persName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#MrsHarris">Mrs. Harris</persName> about <persName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#HarrisKatherine">Katherine</persName> coming back
                    with <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#BrownRichard">Richard Brown</persName> –
                    &amp; that it is quite "proper." – I think we shall not be away more than 3
                    weeks – but we may go away again for a week <add place="above">before you
                        return</add> the end of Sep. – <persName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#CraikGeorge">Papa</persName> is really so happy at
                    home – &amp; good that a long absence seems a pity – <persName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#MissStoddart">Miss Stoddart</persName> writes she
                    will keep the cottage for us next August. – Goodbye - my <persName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#CraikDorothy">Lammie</persName> - I know you are
                    happy - I hope you are well. – </p>
