                <p>Our aim in this edition has been to transcribe the content of the letters as
                    accurately as possible without reproducing the physical appearance of the
                    manuscript. Craik’s spelling, punctuation, underlining, superscripts,
                    abbreviations, additions and deletions are retained, except for words which are
                    hyphenated at the end of a line, which we have silently emended. Where Craik
                    uses a non-standard spelling, we have encoded both her spelling and the standard
                    Oxford English Dictionary spelling to faciliate searching. The long s is not
                    encoded.</p>

                <p>Your post card came this morning. – I have been so thankful you were safe away –
                    &amp; knew nothing of all the trouble. The enclosed letters tell you everything
                    -</p>
                <p>Read them and burn them. — Everybody seems in trouble. —</p>
                <p>The house is empty but peaceful — Nobody comes – except <persName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#PikeConnie">Connie</persName> &amp; <persName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#PikeBel">Bel</persName> – </p>
                <p>I was very tired yesterday – <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#PikeBel"
                        >Bel</persName> had tea with me &amp; was awfully kind. Papa and I had an
                    evening together – with little <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Blackie"
                        >Blackie</persName> – who sat alternately on his shoulders and my lap –
                    Today I feel better – &amp; am trying to do my work. – </p>
                <p><persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#CockerellSydney" cert="low"><unclear reason="illegible">Carlie</unclear> Cockerell</persName> wrote
                    such a nice letter — asking what they had done to offend us that we never met —
                    I answered that there was nothing amiss — except that I did not like his
                    grandfather — &amp; asked him to bring <persName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex#CockerellOlive">Olive</persName> over to dinner
                    tomorrow. –</p>
                <p>On Sunday Papa and I shall go to the funeral. —</p>
                <p>That is all. — I am glad my child is happy — give my love to them all</p>
