            <p>Our aim in this edition has been to transcribe the content of the letters as
               accurately as possible without reproducing the physical appearance of the manuscript.
               Craik’s spelling, punctuation, underlining, superscripts, abbreviations, additions
               and deletions are retained, except for words which are hyphenated at the end of a
               line, which we have silently emended. Where Craik uses a non-standard spelling, we
               have encoded both her spelling and the standard Oxford English Dictionary spelling to
               faciliate searching. The long s is not encoded.</p>

            <p>My dear little one must get <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Charlotte"
                  >Charlotte</persName> or some one to read her this letter as I have not time to
               print it. – Inside are some fairies wine glasses – &amp; fairies tablecloths which I
               picked up today for my little girl – we are <add place="above"><metamark
                     place="below" function="insertion" rend="caret"/>in</add> such a wild place in
               the middle of a moor with ponies <unclear>running</unclear> about &amp; great big
               stones &amp; scarcely a house to be seen. – <persName
                  ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#CraikGeorge">Papa</persName> &amp; I are just going out on
               walk under the stars. The puppy that is coming is such a funny one – black – with a
               white collar &amp; white stockings &amp; a white mark above his nose. – But he is a
               baby it will be five weeks before he can leave his mother – &amp; then you will have
               to treat him very tenderly. &amp; carry him round the garden. &amp; feed him with
               milk. – He &amp; a pot of honey for <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#CoxMrs">Mrs.
                  Cox</persName> are to come in a hamper together. &amp; I truly hope he will not
               eat the honey. – </p>
            <p>I hope my dear little girl has no more tooth-ache – but is happy &amp; good. This day
               week mama will be at home – tell <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#JenningsFelicia"
                  >Miss Jennings</persName> – &amp; give her my love – &amp; also to Cousin
                  <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Alice">Alice's</persName> mama &amp; papa – whom
               you must take great care of. &amp; see that they have the carriage whenever they want
               it. – Tell <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#KeeneJohn">Keene</persName> mama hopes
               to see her rose-garden all ready except the planting. &amp; is sure he will do it
               very nicely – I hope <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Jim">Jim's</persName> poor
               father is better – &amp; everybody in the house at home quite well – </p>
