                            >Mr. Chapman</persName></salute></opener>
                <p>I find I shall want some money by the end of this week – Will it be convenient if
                    we settle for <title corresp="CraikSiteIndex.xml#HeadOfTheFamily">the Head of
                        the Family</title>? I have had, you know, <measure type="currency"
                        >£50</measure> – &amp; of course I may look for the other <measure
                        type="currency">£100.</measure></p>
                <p> Will you have my Boys’ <hi rend="underline">Book</hi>? It is for lads of from
                    ten to fifteen – a story – or rather an imaginary autobiography entitled “<title
                        corresp="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Hero">A Hero</title> – ” – And don’t be alarmed
                    – there isn’t any Scotch in it!</p>
                <p> As for <title corresp="CraikSiteIndex.xml#AliceLearmont">Alice Learmont</title>
                    , as I don’t just yet want the money she may as well get on a little better –
                    You know, I made no bargain for her – believing you would give me the same, as
                        <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#GaskellElizabeth">Mrs. <choice>
                            <sic>Gaskill</sic>
                            <reg resp="CraikSiteIndex.xml#FukushimaKailey">Gaskell</reg>
                        </choice></persName> told me, you gave <hi rend="underline">her</hi>, for
                    the first 2000 of <title corresp="CraikSiteIndex.xml#MoorlandCottage">the
                        Moorland Cottage</title> – Which I trust you will. I have a firm belief in
                        “<title corresp="CraikSiteIndex.xml#AliceLearmont">Alice</title>” yet; and,
                    at the worst, you know ours is, so to speak, a “running amount”. in which you
                    will not lose – as if it please heaven to keep me in health &amp; brains, I am
                    determined to be a “standard author” yet, &amp; trouble you with shilling
                    editions à la <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#BulwerLyttonEdward"><unclear
                            reason="illegible">Bulwer.</unclear></persName></p>
                <p>You know, I am a conscientious young woman, &amp; couldn’t sleep o' nights if I
                    cheated my publishers, but at the same time, I trust to you <hi rend="underline"
                        >always</hi> to give me the full honest value for what I do, that I may not
                    have to go to any one else. And please make your “big” profits – which of course
                    you want &amp; deserve – out of less honest literary folk than I.</p>
                <p> If I have a line from you I will bring “<title corresp="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Hero"
                        >A Hero</title>” on <date>Thursday</date>.</p>

Jan January 19 th 1851. Dear Mr. Chapman
