				<p>I have waited daily to hear from you about my copyrights. – You told me that none
					of my books paid except the <title corresp="CraikSiteIndex.xml#HeadOfTheFamily"
						>Head of the Family</title> – you therefore can have no object in retaining
					the copyrights, &amp; I wish them, in order to make, one day, a uniform edition
					of all my books. – </p>
				<p>Why do you put on the title-page <add place="above">&amp; in advertisements</add>
					of <title corresp="CraikSiteIndex.xml#AgathasHusband">Agatha’s Husband</title> —
					“By the Author of <title corresp="CraikSiteIndex.xml#JohnHalifaxGentleman">John
						Halifax</title>”? — <orgName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#HurstBlackett">Messrs
						Hurst &amp; Blackett</orgName> strongly object to it – as injuring their
					sale – &amp; they wished me to communicate with you on the subject if I
					concurred with them in their protest, which I do. – </p>
				<p>I cannot but think that the fair way of settling all these difficulties will be
					the plan I suggested of letting me re-purchase my copyrights — State a
					reasonable sum – saying what numbers of second edition copies you have on hand
					&amp; what time you may require to sell them in, – before I print any new
					edition: &amp; let us come to an amicable arrangement. – You say I have been a
					loss to you – little as my copyrights have cost you, comparatively: – I fully
					believe all you say – &amp; contribute it to your not being a regular novel
					publisher, or to some trade matters of advertisement &amp;c – which prevent the
					sale. – This is the only conclusion I can come to – for my other books, not a
					whit better or more popular than yours, are satisfactory to both author &amp;
					publisher. – </p>
				<p>Will you answer this letter at once? – &amp; believe me, with no abatement of
					kindly feeling, but settling down all our difference to the result of
					circumstances</p>

I have waited daily to hear from you about my copyrights. – You told me that none of my books paid except the Head of the Family – you therefore can have no object in retaining the copyrights, & I wish them, in order to make, one day, a uniform edition of all my books. –
