                <p>Our aim in this edition has been to transcribe the content of the letters as
                    accurately as possible without reproducing the physical appearance of the manuscript.
                    Craik’s spelling, punctuation, underlining, superscripts, abbreviations, additions
                    and deletions are retained, except for words which are hyphenated at the end of a
                    line, which we have silently emended. Where Craik uses a non-standard spelling, we
                    have encoded both her spelling and the standard Oxford English Dictionary spelling to
                    faciliate searching. The long s is not encoded.</p>

                    indeed I should never think of being paid for the few accidental dinners <rs
                        type="person" ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#CockerellOlive">the child</rs> has
                    hitherto had – I only wish I could get her to eat more! – but still she is
                    improving – &amp; she generally enjoys her tea. You will have got my note &amp;
                    must think it over &amp; let me know. – </p>
                <p>Believe – if I can in any way lighten your burden &amp; <rs type="person">your
                        wife</rs>’s – I am glad – </p>

Craik’s spelling, punctuation, underlining, superscripts, abbreviations, additions and deletions are retained, except for words which are hyphenated at the end of a line, which we have silently emended. Where Craik uses a non-standard spelling, we have encoded both her spelling and the standard Oxford English Dictionary spelling to faciliate searching. The long s is not encoded.

I shall fill up your cheque for £1.13.4 – for indeed I should never think of being paid for the few accidental dinners the child has hitherto had – I only wish I could get her to eat more! – but still she is improving – & she generally enjoys her tea. You will have got my note & must think it over & let me know. –

Believe – if I can in any way lighten your burden & your wife’s – I am glad –
