               Craik’s spelling, punctuation, underlining, superscripts, abbrieviations, additions

               line, which we have silently emended. Where Craik uses a non-standard spelling, we
               have encoded both her spelling and the standard Oxford English Dictionary spelling to
               faciliate searching. The long s is not encoded.</p>

            <p>The letter was from <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#MrsMulock">Mrs.
                  Mulock</persName> saying her boy <persName>Francis</persName> – was dead – so of
               course I do not go to <placeName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Kilnagarna"
                  >Kilnagarna</placeName>. but I must go to <placeName
                  ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Athlone">Athlone</placeName> &amp; see <persName
                  ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#WolleyEmily">Mrs. Wolley’s</persName> sister. I had
               already written that I should reach there at 8:45 P.M. on Thursday – you will have
               heard that we only leave <placeName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#LoughEskeCastle">Lough
                  Eske Castle</placeName> that day – &amp; the <orgName
                  ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Pike">Pikes</orgName> must go through to <placeName
                  ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Dublin">Dublin</placeName> – which <persName
                  ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#CraikGeorge">Papa</persName> &amp;
                  <persName>Eunice</persName> come to <placeName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Tore"
                  >Tore</placeName>- &amp; I go from <placeName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Mullingar"
                  >Mullingar</placeName> direct to <placeName>Athlone</placeName>. I would come back
               on Thursday afternoon if <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#PilkingtonAlexander"
                  >Alexander</persName>
               <del rend="overstrike">could</del> or anybody <add place="above">could meet me</add>
               – <choice>

               </choice>-0<unclear>I almost </unclear> prefer <unclear><placeName
                     ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Hunnen">Hunnen</placeName></unclear> as giving less
               trouble – I could leave <placeName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Athlone"
                  >Athlone</placeName> at 12:42 &amp; be at <placeName
                  ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Castletown">Castletown</placeName> at 1:32 or <placeName
                  ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Mullingar">Mullingar</placeName> at 1:52 whichever was
               most convenient – if you would send a line to "<persName
                  ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#LangrisheAmitia">Mrs. Langrishe</persName><placeName
                  ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#ShamrockLodge">Shamrock Lodge, Athlone</placeName>". I
               feel how our changes may “bother” the family- but all are quite unavoidable. It is
               such a cross journey. On that Thursday I shall be travelling past fourteen hours!! As
               for the <orgName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Pike">Pikes</orgName> it is worrisome to
               think of – but they must go – as <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#PikeBel"
                  >Bel</persName> will be at <placeName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Llanfairfechan"
                  >Llanfairfechan</placeName> quite alone – &amp; <persName
                  ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#MrsWhite">Mrs. White</persName> leaves the end of the
               month &amp; <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#PikeConnie">Connie</persName> &amp; she
               have to arrange no end of things – we had a heavenly day yesterday &amp; today a
               steady down-pour – decisively they all started for <placeName
                  ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#SlieveLeague">Slieve League</placeName>.
                  <persName>Fred</persName> &amp; the three quite walking. <persName
                  ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#CraikGeorge">Papa</persName> on a pony. I stay at home –
               &amp; shall go away without seeing <placeName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#SlieveLeague"
                  >Slieve League</placeName> at all. The one chief thing I came for. I hope to find
               my <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#CraikDorothy">lammie</persName> quite well &amp;
               Happy – If poor mother comes to take her away – she must try to bear it &amp;
                  <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#PilkingtonAlexander">Alexander</persName> too –
               they have a very happy life before them please God – &amp; will meet again in only
               three months. I hope <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#PilkingtonAlexander"
                  >Alexander</persName>’s tooth-ache is better – I do feel so sorry for him – poor
               dear boy!- <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#LovellMinna">Minna</persName> is at
                  <placeName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#LochFyne">Loch Fyne</placeName> in the
                  <unclear>unreal</unclear> soaking rain. All week here has been wild wind &amp;
               storms but we have managed to see a good deal &amp; been very happy. <persName
                  ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#PatonFrederickNoel">Fred</persName> has 3 more drawings to
               make &amp;then goes home by boat from <placeName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Derry"
                  >Derry</placeName> to <placeName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Glasgow"
                  >Glasgow</placeName>. He is quite well now - all is well at home. Love to all the
               dear people in <placeName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Tore">Tore</placeName> - </p>
