                <p>I posted a letter to you today, saying we should stop a week here but we find we
                    can't possibly stand it. – We feel as if we were in a reformatory or a lunatic
                    asylum. The people look so awfully melancholy &amp; there are only about 20 in a
                    room as big as a church. – We shall just stay till our clothes are washed and
                    leave on Friday – Whatever we knew not – so write home – as it will reach us
                    sometime – </p>
                <p><persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#CraikGeorge">Papa</persName> wants to go to
                        <placeName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Arran">Arran</placeName> – but <persName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#PikeConnie">Connie</persName> &amp; <persName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#PikeBel">Bel</persName> can't – they want to be back
                    for <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#PikeAda">Ada</persName> – so I think we
                    shall likely go by the Lakes home. The kindness of the <orgName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Swan">Swan</orgName> people was endless. </p>
                <p>– We are just going down to supper – porridge &amp; milk &amp; bread &amp; butter
                    – we dine at 1:30 – poor <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#CraikGeorge"
                        >Papa</persName>! – We are beginning to feel something between inebriates
                    &amp; <unclear reason="illegible">hypochondriacs</unclear> – or reformatory
                    children – but a drive tomorrow to the <unclear reason="illegible">roman
                        wall</unclear> will revive us. – You will be safe &amp; happy at <placeName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Tore">Tore</placeName>, my darling. I like to think
                    of all of you there, will George bring you back, I wonder – and when? – I hope
                    Alexander practices his singing. – &amp; that you don't omit yours. <hi
                        rend="underline">Can</hi> you sing now? </p>
                <p>– No more – for we have only time for supper &amp; bed. The gas is put out at
                    10:30! We have just descended to supper. Where we feasted on porridge –
                    skim-milk – bread &amp; butter with sugar in it for consolation. &amp; a cup of
                    cocoa for <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#CraikGeorge">Papa</persName> – who
                    behaves with angelic composure. For us, we can't help going into such fits of
                    laughter over our position on a holiday tour |!| – that we are not very
                    miserable – but we shall enjoy getting away! – Goodnight my darling child. Give
                    my love to <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#PilkingtonAlexander"
                        >Alexander</persName>.</p>
