                <p>On some accounts it is satisfactory to me that the novel should be delayed for a
                    few months. While the proofs of <choice>
                        <abbr>Vol</abbr>
                        <expan>Volume</expan>
                    </choice> III were passing through my hands, I noticed one portion which I
                    longed to extend &amp; remodel – in fact it once crossed my mind to write to you
                    on the subject – but I thought the speedy publication would not allow time.
                    Thus, I shall have no difficulty in making the addition you desire.</p>
                <p>But, as regards pecuniary arrangements, this sudden change in your plans becomes
                    a most serious inconvenience to me. I believe the agreement made for me by
                        <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#HerveyThomasKibble">Mr. Hervey</persName>,
                    was – that I should receive <measure type="currency">£50</measure> on delivery
                    of the <choice>
                        <abbr>M.S.</abbr>
                        <expan>manuscript</expan>
                    </choice> &amp; <measure type="currency">£100</measure> more on the day of
                    publication which I understand most positively was to be immediately. The idea
                    was of course confirmed by the fact of my receiving proofs up to the middle of <choice>
                        <abbr>Vol</abbr>
                        <expan>Volume</expan>
                    </choice> III – Therefore depending on the speedy receipt of this sum, I have
                    employed myself entirely on a little Christmas-book, which I intended to send
                    for your decision when completed. For this, I have neglected all other work,
                    &amp; consequently, unless I receive <del rend="strikethrough">an</del>
                    <del rend="squiggles"><gap quantity="1" unit="word" reason="illegible"/></del>
                    advance on the postponed novel I shall find myself for some months with an
                    income of <hi rend="underline">nihil.</hi></p>
                <p>Under <del rend="strikethrough">these</del> circumstances, will you consider a
                    trespass on your kindness if I ask you to advance me, <hi rend="underline"
                        >now</hi>, <measure type="currency">£50</measure> more – the remaining
                        <measure type="currency">£50</measure> to be received, as before agreed on
                    the day of publication?</p>
                <p>I need not remind you that hitherto my part in this affair has been punctually
                    fulfilled – that the <choice>

                        <expan>manuscript</expan>
                    </choice> was delivered to you by the first week in April with all the additions
