                    given me the substance of your conversation with him. – You state 1<hi
                        rend="superscript"><hi rend="underline">st</hi></hi> that there having been
                    no agreement between us but, the agreement of copyrights given you sole <choice>
                        <sic>copy-right</sic>
                        <reg resp="CraikSiteIndex.xml#FukushimaKailey">copyright</reg>
                    </choice> in all my books, here &amp; abroad 2<hi rend="superscript"><hi
                            rend="underline">nd</hi></hi> that there being no convention with
                        <placeName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Prussia">Prussia</placeName> when the
                    books were published gives neither of us any right at all. – 3<hi
                        rend="superscript"><hi rend="underline">rd</hi></hi> that you are open to
                    any proposal I may make about sharing the offer made by <orgName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Tauchnitz">Tauchnitz</orgName></p>
                <p>The answer to these I can only refer you to the Conversation which I have read –
                    which bears date before <date when="1852">the date of the <title
                            corresp="CraikSiteIndex.xml#HeadOfTheFamily">Head of the
                        Family</title></date> &amp; gives sole right to the author – Also – to
                    prevent all doubt of the matter – may I ask you to favor me with a copy of the
                    assignments I signed, which are in your possession, &amp; of which I should have
                    taken a copy at the time. – When I hear from you you shall again hear from me:
                    &amp; may I request a speedy answer as this delay is injuring me considerably, –
                    though it is probably a trifle to you. – </p>
                <p>I do not wish in any way to blame you, or to assert more than my rights: – the
                    sum you gave me for my novels was what I was then content to take – &amp; I have
                    no right to complain: – but you must be aware that it was a sum sufficiently
                    small – viz – <measure type="currency">£600</measure> for 4 successful novels –
                    the reprints of which must bring in a settled advantage – <del
                        rend="overwritten"><gap quantity="1" unit="word" reason="illegible"
                        />of</del> in which the author does not share. – </p>
                <p> – Therefore it behoves me to get any advantage I can out of foreign <choice>
                        <sic>copy rights</sic>
                        <reg resp="CraikSiteIndex.xml#FukushimaKailey">copyrights</reg>
                    </choice>, or in any other way that offers no injustice to you. – </p>
                <p>Will you understand that I do not wish to <hi rend="underdoubleline">fight</hi>:
                    that our old relations were too kindly for me to desire to counteract them now:
                    trust that I wish it made out clear what are your rights &amp; what are mine –
                    in these 4 Novels &amp; <title corresp="CraikSitIndex.xml#AliceLearmont">Alice
                        Learmont</title>. – I say, upon reading the convention with a lawyer that
                    the right is mine. – If the copies of our arrangement which I now ask you for,
                    prove the contrary, if you determine to use your right to the full in
                    consequence of any omission of other agreements on my part – I have no more to

Craik’s spelling, punctuation, underlining, superscripts, abbreviations, additions and deletions are retained, except for words which are hyphenated at the end of a line, which we have silently emended.
