                    have encoded both her spelling and the standard Oxford English Dictionary spelling to

                <p><persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#ChambersAnne">Mrs. Chambers</persName> is
                    writing to you – so I am inclined to do the same – just to say that on my deary
                    adieu to my dear beautiful <placeName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Scotland"
                        >Scotland</placeName> <date when="1849-09-01">next Saturday</date> – I carry <add
                        place="above">away</add> among my pleasantest recollections that of the nice
                    day &amp; night we spent with you – when I hear the word “<placeName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Greenock">Greenock</placeName>” it will put me in
                    mind – not of an ugly dirty sea-port – but of that bonnie cottage. <persName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#MrLamont">Mr. Lamont</persName> &amp; his Gaelic –
                    your two “boys” especially <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#LamontTom">Mr.
                        Tom</persName> &amp; his drawing – I shall see myself in the white fur
                    mantle peering out through the rain where the mountains were supposed to be. And
                    then the delicious evening fireside that nice good <persName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#PatonAllanPark">Allan Park Paton</persName> included
                    – oh – but I wish it were all to come over again!</p>
                <p>Well – I can only say – that if ever I find myself in the West again – (&amp;
                    please Heaven I may – for life is long &amp; I am only three-&amp;-twenty yet –)
                    then my dear <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#MrsLamont">Mrs. Lamont</persName>
                    – you will probably see a <unclear reason="illegible">tall</unclear> visitor at
                    your door – “get up &amp; let me in” – </p>
                <p>And meanwhile if any of your people visit <placeName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#London">London</placeName> – they will find at <hi
                        rend="underline"><placeName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#CamdenStreet">18 Camden
                            St. North</placeName>

Doune Terrace August 26 1849 Dear Mrs. Lamont

Mrs. Chambers is writing to you – so I am inclined to do the same – just to say that on my deary adieu to my dear beautiful Scotland next Saturday – I carry away among my pleasantest recollections that of the nice day & night we spent with you – when I hear the word “Greenock” it will put me in mind – not of an ugly dirty sea-port – but of that bonnie cottage. Mr. Lamont & his Gaelic – your two “boys” especially Mr. Tom & his drawing – I shall see myself in the white fur mantle peering out through the rain where the mountains were supposed to be. And then the delicious evening fireside that nice good Allan Park Paton included – oh – but I wish it were all to come over again!
