                    a novel by <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#DobellClarence">Clarence
                        Dobell</persName> – the “favorite” brother of <persName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#DobellSydney">Sydney</persName> – himself both an
                    author &amp; an artist – though also a man of business. – Consequently he does
                    very little – but that little is first-rate. He has all <persName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#DobellSydney">Sydney</persName>’s power – without
                    his eccentricities. This novel has taken about three years to write – It is
                    historical – at the time of the battle of <placeName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Tewkesbury">Tewkesbury</placeName> – which in many
                    was was a curious reflection of our times – so that it is not made of dry bones
                    but flesh &amp; blood – after the fashion of <persName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#KingsleyCharles">Charles Kingsley</persName> – I
                    think it would tell well in America. &amp; <choice>

Would the International like for “lightning” – a novel by Clarence Dobell – the “favorite” brother of Sydney – himself both an author & an artist – though also a man of business. – Consequently he does very little – but that little is first-rate. He has all Sydney’s power – without his eccentricities. This novel has taken about three years to write – It is historical – at the time of the battle of Tewkesbury – which in many was was a curious reflection of our times – so that it is not made of dry bones but flesh & blood – after the fashion of Charles Kingsley – I think it would tell well in America. & shd should be glad to send it, if I thought it would suit – But if you think decidedly not, I would rather not lose the time – will you let me hear? –
